Grouse & Label v Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Crowthorne Sunday XI on Sun 15 Aug 2010 at 2:00
Crowthorne & Crown Wood Cricket Club Lost by 9 runs

Match report 10-man Crows succumb to a narrow 9-run defeat at the hands of Grouse and Label on an interesting looking Bisley Pitch. Despite all efforts to field 11 men, The Crows took the field disappointingly with just 10, a fact that was to ultimately prove the difference between the teams.

Crows bowled first on a pitch that looked woefully under prepared, but eventually didn’t play too badly. Think of a mediocre Great Hollands track with a lot more grass on. However despite the deceptive appearance, G&L made a good start with several boundaries coming from their Left-handed opening pair. Pete Clarke making a welcome return to the team after a few weeks on the sidelines was in good form extracting movement in the air and off the pitch and soon made the breakthrough removing G&L skipper “Sam”

Crows bowling and fielding excellence was to perhaps be their downfall as G&L who started the game with just 9 men, called for re-enforcements as the wickets tumbled. Lower-order batsman Kasum, who was very obviously batting a few places below his true position, came to the crease earlier than expected and subsequently punished the Crows the most with several well-struck 6’s, including one off Robin Stent that cleared the sight-screen, the fence and landed on the road, agonizingly close to a couple of passing cars.

In total 7 different players held catches for the Crows. Surely some kind of record. Robin Stent caught one at square leg to get the ball rolling, Mackenzie had them in a Frenzy when he held a well-struck shot to cover, Partridge nonchalantly took one at Slip off Ingram, Captain Shaw grassed a familiar simple looking chance before making amends with a flamboyant and needless dive to give Clarke his send wicket and holding onto another one off the expectant Partridge. Saunders took a sharp return catch, Sheppard pouched one at square leg and bearded gloveman Hester took a neat catch behind the stumps off the wily Ingram as well as a skier off the bowling of Partridge.

There were wickets for Dan (2-14), Top Gun, Todd Saunders, (3-7) Pete (2-29) Colin (3-15). Whilst Clarke, Sheppard and Stent were fruitless for their labours avec le ball.

Crows response got off to a steady start, with bespectacled opening duo of Stent, R and MacKenzie, F ticking the scoreboard over nicely before Stent had his off-stump pegged back attempting a pull off opening bowler Dean “Deano” Dean This bought leg-side dynamo and erstwhile skipper Dave Shaw to the crease, finely attired with a Crows sweater on and took him no time to find his favourite deep mid-wicket boundary. MacKenzie failed to get into his stride, possibly still riled by having his batting gloves rustled by an eager opposition player earlier in the proceedings, soon departed for a dogged 6 and was followed in Swift fashion by Shaw who missed a full delivery that lodged at the base of his scattered stumps.

Calypso Kid, Sean Clarke strolled to the Crease, edged one to slip and strolled back for an unlucky duck. This however bought together middle–order powerhouses Colin Ingram and Pete Clarke. Both weathered a few overs of hostile bowling from the change bowlers before Clarke in particular opened his shoulders and dispatched fast bowler Sandeep for 18 in one over to tip the advantage in the favour of the Crows.

Ingram wasn’t to be out-done however and he joined in the fun, dispatching several trademarked thunderous boundaries to all parts of the Bisley Rec. Not even the introduction of number 5 batsman Sandeep Rodrigo could stem the tide of runs as Clarke and Ingram made metaphorical hay in the occasional sunshine.

However the reintroduction of Sandeep to replace Sandeep Rodrigo (batsman number 5) was to be the turning point. Clarke and Ingram departed as did Detective Chief Inspector Hester without troubling the scorers, leaving Simon Sheppard to guide the Crows towards their moderate target. For a while it looked like he may live up to his Saviour moniker, as he and Todd Saunders carefully advanced the Crows cause and got the target down to within agonizingly touching distance.

When Sheppard eventually departed, the target was down to under 20 for the last wicket. Saunders struck a couple of hefty blows, as is his want, to reduce the target further still., whilst a watchful Partridge hung on at the other end as the pitch started to live up to it’s initial

Newbury-wielding Partridge feathered one to the keeper without scoring and it was all over, an agonizing 9 runs short of the target and the hard-hitting Saunders stranded at the other end when he looked for all money to have it in him to win the game for the Crows.

Thanks to those he played, another good game in a great spirit and great team spirit demonstrated throughout. Shame we lost but hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to G&L for their hospitality.
